flirtation

she listened to me
the girl in the movie
(usually they don’t).
i urged her to go back
pleaded for her to finish it
to grow tired of it
let it run its course
instead of yearning forever
for the intensity of that desperation,
that intimate deadline.
forever is never as exciting
as the last today
but you only know it
if you’ve flirted with eternity
and found it lacking in character.
