irreversible

the passage we chose was irreversible
we ran without moving our feet,
raced without the acceleration of hearts
that commonly accompanies such behavior

we dreamed it before we danced in the dark
(but dreams imply desire,
so perhaps they were portents
or harbingers instead)

you tucked my hair behind my ears
my bones might have mistaken
the action for affection
starved as they were for passion’s marrow

so long was the hour passed
under the spell of wishing well
tattoos revealed and covered
covers revealed in tattoos
