I’m angry at Edith Wharton

Preposterous, I know, being that the anger

would be posthumous

but why did she have to insert that passage

with the woman’s head in

her husband’s lap, his hands

moving to and fro over her hair?

I recall a time when my hair was stroked

in that fashion.

Delicately, belying the anger

underneath.
